MALI Contemporary Art Wing

MALI Contemporary Art Wing is a proposed design for a new building wing for the Museo de Arte de Lima, as a submission for the open international 2016 MALI Contemporary Art Wing design competition. The design is conceived as an urban oasis, which includes a microclimate public plaza that is shaded by a large canopy, along with water and skywalk follie enhancements incorporated into the existing park beyond. The public plaza is envisioned as a connection between the larger city environment and the museum location. Because of the historical significance of the existing Exhibition Palace museum building, the new wing is almost completely underground, so that views to the existing museum building from nearby vantage points are not blocked. Upon entry, visitors are presented with a spacious atrium space and a monumental stair that leads down to the classroom and gallery levels. Art circulation is carefully planned to allow for ease of public access to the wing building without interference to museum functions. On the plaza level, green roof garden plants and a misting system from the canopy above provide an oasis-like public space.
